My Personal Designer: What it’s all about and how you can customise your own jewellery
Posted on March 27 2019
Everyone’s journey is different—some may have had come quite far from where they started, while others are barely beginning a new chapter in their lives. And that’s why it’s important to commemorate every milestone, big or small, in a way that is most personal and intimate to you and your story.
But how do you create a dream jewellery that’s truly yours and yours alone? We speak to Assistant Manager Elise Leu and Jewellery Designer Sharon Hooi from Lee Hwa Jewellery to find out more about the services of My Personal Designer, and how you can express yourself with one-of-a-kind pieces made just for you.
What is My Personal Designer and what do you do?
My Personal Designer is basically a service where you can personalise all kinds of jewellery for themselves to mark a special occasion or milestone. We realise that there’s no one-size-fits-all in this industry, and that’s why through creating bespoke pieces, we hope to help our customers express their individuality. Anyone can make an appointment with us! We’ll sit down with them in a comfortable space called the Personal Designer Suite and guide them through the entire process—from inspiration to the nitty gritty details.
As a Personal Designer, we basically listen to our customers’ requests and come up with design ideas for them. If we already have enough information, such as specific diamond settings, engraving details or jewellery finishing they want, we can even start showing them realistic mock-ups of the design at the first session.
What kinds of customisation does My Personal Designer provide?
Many people think we only create wedding bands or engagement rings, but we actually do a lot more! We hope to help our customers celebrate any milestone, really—from anniversaries to the birth of their children.
More specifically, customers can choose from a range of products including rings, necklaces, pendant earrings, bracelets and bangles. Then they can choose from different textures, diamond settings, gems, type of gold (e.g. white gold or rose gold), and of course set their overall budget. They can also request for an engraved message on their jewellery for a personal touch!
Are there any restrictions to requests?
One thing we strictly adhere to is that we will not replicate designs that are patented or have copyright. So if someone comes to us with a design they found online, we’re glad to use that as inspiration but will never recreate the exact piece. Afterall, the point of My Personal Designer is to create one-of-a-kind jewellery.
We will also not use a diamond or gem provided by the customer if it’s without an official certificate or serial number.
How long does it normally take (on average) for a customised piece to be completed?
The duration ranges depending on the complexity of the design. But usually, the drawings of the design will be ready for viewing around two weeks after the consultation session.
What are some occasions you think warrant a customised jewellery?
Definitely the big moments like weddings and proposals. But to be honest, there are so many other occasions we can commemorate with a bespoke piece of jewellery. It can be for marking a romantic milestone as a couple, or celebrating your growth through a difficult time. And sometimes, you can customise an everyday accessory simply to add a personal flair into your wardrobe.
One of the more interesting reasons can also be to create a unique family heirloom that can be passed down from generation to generation. I think the longevity in that is really meaningful.
What’s one advice you would give to people looking to customise their own jewellery?
Know why you’re creating this piece in the first place. What is the significance behind customising a one-of-a-kind jewellery? Is it for a loved one, or are you trying to remind yourself of something you hold on to dearly? When you know the purpose behind your jewellery, we’re able to help design something that can capture that story in its entirety.
